SMU College of Podiatric Medicine Faculty, Timothy Dutra, Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Emma Goodman

Dr. Timothy Dutra, DPM ‘85, recently received a lifetime achievement award from the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) at its recent Stand Alone Meeting in Chandler, Arizona. Dutra is an Assistant Professor at Samuel Merritt University (SMU) College of Podiatric Medicine (CPM) and has been an esteemed faculty member since 1987.

A native of the East Bay, Dutra earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis, and graduate degrees from California State University, East Bay. After receiving his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree at the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM)—the former name of SMU CPM—he completed his residency training and podiatric sports medicine fellowship in Long Beach, CA.

“I greatly appreciate the education and training that CCPM provided me for having a successful and exciting career in podiatric medicine and surgery, as well as the opportunity to share my passion for sports medicine with our podiatric students,” Dutra reflects.

He credits his success to exceptional mentorship throughout his education and training, citing Drs. Doug Richie, Bill Olson, John Pagliano, Ron Valmassy, Rich Blake, and Chris Smith, as well as the privilege of working alongside many great and elite athletes across all sports and levels.

With over two decades of practice in San Leandro, Dutra built a remarkable reputation for his wide-ranging contributions to the field. These include nearly 25 years as Podiatric Team Physician for the University of California, Berkeley's intercollegiate athletics, serving as Clinical Director for the Special Olympics of Northern California Healthy Athletes Fit Feet Program, mentoring podiatry students in education and training at SMU CPM, and leading students on CPM Medical Missions to the California-Mexico border.

His impact extends well beyond the clinic and classroom. Dutra has held leadership roles in numerous professional and community organizations, serving as president of the AAPSM, the Alameda-Contra Costa Podiatric Medical Association, SMU's Faculty Organization, the Alameda County Medical Center Foundation, the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce, and the San Leandro Kiwanis. Dutra was previously recognized for his contributions with SMU’s first Health Impact Outstanding Service Award in 2023.

The AAPSM Lifetime Achievement Award was presented in recognition of Dutra's long-standing commitment to the AAPSM, honoring the countless hours and tremendous energy he has devoted to shaping and strengthening the organization over many years. “Sports medicine has always been my passion, and the Academy has been the foundation and promoter of podiatric sports medicine throughout my 40-year career,” says Dutra.

The sentiment was echoed by Rita Yates, Executive Director of the AAPSM, who remarked at the meeting, “Those of us that know Tim understand that his contributions go far beyond titles or roles. His mentorship, dedication, and friendships have left a lasting impact on countless colleagues and students alike.”

Reflecting on his career, Dutra adds, “I am so thankful to have been a part of the generation of sports podiatrists who treated many different sports and became an integral part of the sports medicine team.”
