Nursing Success! Seminar Welcomes Prospective Students to SMU

More than 130 prospective nursing students explored the path to a healthcare career during the Nursing Success! Seminar held Friday, June 27, 2025, at Samuel Merritt University’s Oakland and Sacramento campuses.
Organized by the SMU Admissions Department, the three-day seminar takes place twice a year — once in January and once in June — and includes two virtual learning days followed by an immersive in-person experience on campus. From simulation lab exercises to conversations with current students and professionals in the field, attendees got a firsthand look at the academic environment and support system that sets SMU apart.

The seminar was designed to give prospective students — whether new to healthcare or considering a career change — an opportunity to explore SMU’s nursing programs in a supportive, informative setting before making the commitment to return to school. The seminar welcomed a wide range of nontraditional students — from career changers and new parents to individuals from historically underrepresented backgrounds in nursing — reflecting the diversity of those called to serve in healthcare. This diversity enriched the experience, fostering a sense of inclusion and shared purpose.

“I don’t have a background in healthcare so I was very excited to learn more about the different paths you can take after you're a nurse and I’m very happy that there's, like, a million possibilities for people to really find their passion, and also that your passion can change through time and there’s always going to be something for you,” said Karol Garcia Estrada, a prospective student at the Oakland campus.
Students also heard directly from current SMU nursing students about their academic journeys and what it’s like to be part of the SMU community.

"I love the diversity of it, especially how there’s thousands of ways that you could go if you ever get bored,” said student panelist, Maria Ayala ABSN '25, on what they enjoy about a career in the nursing field.
Participants received resource handouts, SMU merch bags, and enjoyed a light breakfast and lunch while connecting with peers and faculty.

“I feel very supported by all the faculty and everybody they’re working with, like the speakers and the professors. So, I’m really excited to kind of really be able to connect with the people at SMU,” Jasmeen Suman, a prospective student, reflected.
The Nursing Success! Seminar is just one of the ways SMU supports students at every stage of their academic and professional journey. Fore more events and opportunities to explore SMU programs check out the events webpage.
